CasaPrivacy Policy
Casa is built so that your kitchen stays yours. This policy explains what Casa handles, where it lives, and the few times it talks to anyone else.
The short version
- Casa has no server of its own and no user accounts. We never receive your recipes, pantry, plans or lists.
- Your household data is stored on your devices and synced through your own iCloud account, shared only with people you invite.
- There are no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party SDKs in Casa.
- Ask Casa, text recognition and other smart features run on your device.
- Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We don't see your payment details.
1. Who we are
Casa is an app for planning meals, tracking a pantry and sharing a shopping list, made by Ben Anderson, an independent developer in Australia. In this policy, "Casa", "we" and "us" mean the developer of the Casa app and this website, casa-app.com.au.
2. What Casa stores, and where
To do its job, Casa keeps the things you put into it: recipes and their photos, pantry items and best-before dates, meal plans and notes, shopping list items and regulars, your household's name and the display name you choose, and your preferences.
On your devices
This information is stored on your iPhone or iPad. Some small pieces, such as your appearance and theme choices, the data shown in Casa's widgets, and files you share into Casa from other apps, are kept in storage that only Casa and its extensions on your device can read.
In your iCloud account
If you're signed in to iCloud, Casa syncs your household between your devices using Apple's CloudKit, in the private database of your own iCloud account. Apple stores and protects this data under the Apple Privacy Policy. We can't access your iCloud data.
When you share a household
If you invite people to your household, Casa uses iCloud sharing so they can see and change the shared recipes, pantry, plan and list. The people in a shared household can see what's in it, and Casa shows members' names next to things like list items so everyone knows who added what. You choose who to invite, and you can stop sharing at any time. Anyone who has joined can leave.
3. What we collect
Nothing. Casa has no server of our own, no sign-up, and no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting tools. Nothing you do in Casa is sent to us, and we don't sell, rent or share personal information, because we don't have any.
If you email us, we'll receive your email address and whatever you choose to include, and we'll use it only to reply and help you. We delete support emails when they're no longer needed.
4. Connections Casa makes for you
A few features need the internet. When you use them, your device connects directly to the service involved, not to us.
- Importing a recipe from a website. Casa fetches the web page you chose from that website, just as a browser would. That site's own privacy policy applies to the visit.
- Looking up a barcode. When you scan a barcode Casa doesn't recognise, it sends that barcode number to Open Food Facts, a free public food database, to suggest a product name, brand and size. Only the barcode is sent, with nothing that identifies you or your device.
- Saving a recipe from Apple News. For some Apple News links, Casa looks up the article and the publisher's original recipe page so it can import the recipe. These requests go to Apple News and the publisher's website, and carry nothing that identifies you or your device.
None of these requests include an account, device or advertising identifier, and none of them are made in the background without you asking.
5. Camera, photos and on-device processing
Casa asks for the camera so you can scan barcodes, receipts, printed recipes and product packaging. You can pick photos with Apple's photo picker, which only gives Casa the photos you choose. Text recognition on photos, receipts and documents happens on your device. Photos you save to a recipe or pantry item become part of your household data, stored as described above.
6. Ask Casa and Apple Intelligence
On supported devices, Ask Casa and some other smart features, such as tidying an imported recipe or suggesting meals, use Apple's on-device language model. Your questions and household information are processed on your iPhone or iPad and aren't sent to us or to any other AI service. Ask Casa conversations aren't saved. Closing Ask Casa ends the conversation.
7. Notifications, widgets, Siri and Spotlight
With your permission, Casa schedules reminders on your device, such as use-soon and prep reminders, and cooking timers. Casa's widgets show a small summary of your plan, pantry and list on your Home Screen. If you use Siri, Shortcuts or Spotlight, Casa makes your recipes and other items available to them on your device. These features are provided by iOS, and Apple's privacy policy applies to how iOS handles them.
8. Purchases and subscriptions
Subscriptions are sold and managed by Apple through the App Store. Apple processes your payment and tells Casa, on your device, whether you have an active subscription. Casa remembers that status on your device so it works offline. We don't receive your name, payment details or Apple Account information.
9. Backups you create
You can export your whole household to a .casa backup file. The file contains your household data and photos, and goes wherever you choose to save or send it. It doesn't include iCloud sharing details or members' account identifiers. Keep it somewhere safe, as anyone with the file can open it in Casa.
10. Children
Casa is a general household app and isn't directed at children. Because we don't collect personal information, we don't knowingly collect information from children.
11. Exporting and deleting your data
Because your data lives with you, you're in control of it:
- Export: in Casa, open Settings, then Data, and choose Export All Data.
- Delete items: delete recipes, pantry items, plans and list items in the app. Deletions sync to your other devices.
- Leave a shared household: open Settings, then Household, and choose Leave Household. If you own a shared household, you can stop sharing from the same place.
- Delete everything: delete Casa from your devices, then remove Casa's iCloud data from the Settings app: tap your name, then iCloud, open storage management, choose Casa and delete its data.
12. This website
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or advertising, and doesn't load fonts or scripts from other companies. It's hosted by Cloudflare, which processes basic technical information, such as your IP address and browser type, to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse. 13. Your rights
We respect the Australian Privacy Principles and the privacy rights you have where you live, including rights to access, correct and delete your information. Because Casa's data is held by you rather than by us, you can exercise most of these rights directly in the app or in your iCloud settings. For anything else, or if you have a concern about how we've handled your privacy, contact us. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
14. Changes to this policy
If Casa changes in a way that affects your privacy, for example by adding a feature that sends information somewhere new, we'll update this policy and the effective date above before that change ships. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
